What is a Dreamlining and how can it Rock your World?

In the past, like most of us at some stage, I have set goals. Then I read “The Four Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferriss and my whole world got turned upside down. Yes the book was a huge eye opener, but that wasn’t what rocked my world.

This was…

The first time I read the book, I wrote out my Dreamlines. They were put somewhere, on some piece of paper and frankly, misplaced. About eight months later I found that piece of paper and I just about fell over. I had achieved EVERYTHING I had written down. Not one or two things, but everything.

So what is Dreamlining?

Dreamlining applies a timeline and cost to your dreams. Dreamlines are written in two timelines, 6 months and 12 months. This can obviously be modified to suit you, but should be no longer than 12 months ahead. They consist of things you want to HAVE, things you want to DO and things you want to BE. Here is what you need to do:

Step 1 – Write it Down

HAVE:

This one is pretty clear. These are the things in life that you want to own. There is nothing wrong with just wanting something. We all dream of things that we can’t or wont buy right now, so these should go on your list.

DO:

What experiences do you want to have in your life? Think of something you want to do before you die or a place you want to visit.

BE:

These are more intangible things, the ones you can’t buy. ‘Be’ turns into ‘Do’ in the sense that you need to ‘Do’ something in order to ‘Be’ something. Get it??  If you want to ‘Be’ a great cook, then the ‘Do’ is take cooking lessons (these can just be from someone you know who can cook), or pull out a cook book this weekend and try a new recipe. What have you always wanted to learn to be?

Step 2 – Price It

The next step is to put a price on your Dreamline list. As part of the process, you write down how much your dreams will cost to actualize in the time you have allocated to complete them. In the Four Hour Work Week, the cost is put into terms of Target Monthly Income or Target Daily Income. As for financing your dreams, that is where the Muse Business comes into it in the book.

What is a Muse Business?

Prior to reading the Four Hour Work Week, I had never thought of deliberately creating income streams through business specifically to fulfil my dreams. Tim Ferriss calls them a Muse rather than a business in the traditional sense. If say one of your Dreamlines costs $3000 in total to realise and you want to tick it off your list in the six month timeframe, then your Muse business will need to make you $500 per month.

Alternative Income Streams

How much do you want to achieve your dreamlines? Only you can answer that question. But if you really want it, then there are other ways to finance your dreams such as:

  • Another job
  • Freelancing
  • Selling your excess stuff via Ebay, Craigslist, garage sale etc
  • Create and increase an investment portfolio
  • Save any overtime/extra money that you receive until you reach your goal
  • Set aside any increases in pay rather than spending it

There are heaps of online resources for all of these things plus many other ideas that aren’t listed here. It really is up to you to decide what you want to prioritize in your life. One of my favorite sayings is that ‘no one reads your resume at your funeral’. Your Dreamlines are worth achieving.

Step 3 – Take Action

Taking action is the most crucial step. You can’t just write things down and pray that they happen. Before misplacing my Dreamline list, I looked at what step needed action taken and started the ball rolling. Your actions can be baby steps, but they must be steps.

Hopefully now you can get started towards creating the life you want and deserve. Dreamlining does work and it works incredibly well if you take the steps and especially if you do something every day towards making your Dreamlines a reality.
