I have been inspired by Marc and Angel’s 10 Things You Must Give up to Move Forward based on principles by Steven R Covey. it was shared by a very good friend of mine through Facebook. So I have decided to put myself out there and write my thoughts on each of the 10 things based on my personal experience and opinion.
Number 8 | Making Excuses Rather than Decisions
Making excuses is very similar to procrastination. You think you can justify your lack of action by coming up with every ‘reason’ under the sun as to why you can’t do it. Rather than setting goals that matter to you, putting them into a Dreamline perspective and taking steps to make things happen in your life, you put it off. You know what happens then, you get 5 years down the track and wonder why you haven’t moved forward.
The only person who you hurt with excuses and procrastination is yourself. TWEET THIS
People often make excuses because the situation in front of them looks like a mountain. It is easier to do nothing (and try to justify it) than to take the first step. The thing is, most long term failures are the outcome of people who make excuses rather than decisions. So to move forward, you need to ask yourself “What needs to happen now?”. There are essentially two answers to this question. Something, or nothing. Only you can answer that. For all the whinging and whining about not getting anywhere in life, most people choose nothing.
If you want to move forward and get closer to the life you want, you need to choose to do something. Designing your life is harder than just letting things happen. It means that you are participating at a higher level than most people. If you choose to make positive change in your life, then you are actively committing to learning more about yourself, your business, and your own perceived limitations. Dreamlines are about your fairly immediate future, whereas your desired life is about your dream of your future. You need to know the greater version of your desired life intrinsically and work backwards from there. You also need to know your Dreamlines and create To Do steps to move towards your dream lifestyle. To give you an example of this, here is the current flow of my life:
All you need to do is substitute my desires, dreamlines and goals with your own and start making progress. Then and only then will you start moving forward in life.
As Dale Carnegie said, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage.”
