10 Motivations to Become a Location Independent Entrepreneur

  1. Potential to meet like minded people. Nothing would be more inspiring for a budding entrepreneur than to be able to meet up with another location independent entrepreneur. Someone who is already leading the lifestyle you want to live. Being able to have a conversation with someone who gets where you are coming from would be like winning the lotto.
  2. Choice of location. This one is a no brainer. If a business can be run from anywhere, than you can choose where you want to spend your business and free time. This location could be your regular home so you can be with your family, it could involve a road trip to see friends and relatives (no more rushed weekend only trips), you could relocate to a different part of your home country for a few months to see what another town or state is like, or you could move to the other side of the world.
  3. Freedom of time. Generally when we work for a company, we have no choice in the structure of our hours. So often, people can be working when they are the least productive. For example a morning person being forced to work night hours. Lack of productivity means that companies need to spend more on employee time to get the desired outcome. If you have freedom of time, work output generally increases. Think about it. If you have a busy job with constant phone, email and co-worker interruptions, you are going to get less work done than if you worked in  a quiet, interruption free environment. Freedom of time makes perfect financial sense.
  4. Working on projects that inspire you. Many location independent muse business owners have a couple of projects on the go at once. Often their main source of cash flow is a low energy input business that pays the bills, allowing them to work on more meaningful projects either for income or just for fun. Having the choice to work on projects that inspire you is a key ingredient in happiness.
  5. Balanced life. By choosing when, where and how your work is completed through being location independent, you can adjust your work/life balance to suit you better. Exercise can be broken up throughout the day, there is time to cook nutritious meals rather than grabbing fast food 3 hours after you were supposed to finish work, you can juggle your workload around important events in your life etc. The list for gaining better balance in your life is endless.
  6. Health benefits are high. If you are sick, you can be kind to your body and rest it properly rather than trying to work through the illness or pain. If your business is set up correctly, it can be easy to prepare for such times so they aren’t such a big issue when they happen. Sometimes a company can make employees feel incredibly guilty for any time off. So the peace of mind that comes from knowing you can take time out if you do get sick, often means you don’t get sick in the first place.
  7. You can work in your PJs or a suit – whatever suits your style. Not having a business wardrobe can also save you some serious coin. You can be comfortable whilst you work and therefore more productive. Making a concerted effort to get properly dressed is a good thing for your mindset. It is nice to be relaxed at the same time though.
  8. You can take breaks whenever you want. If your brain is fried and you can’t think straight, you can head out for a walk and some fresh air without feeling guilty. A more flexible work environment provides a massive increase in productivity.
  9. You can’t get fired. Unless you decide to fire yourself of course. You hold the power to your own destiny. You can decide how many streams of income you wish to create. If you want to go back to working for someone else you can if you want to. Ultimately you have the choice of how you swap your time for money.
  10. You can leverage your time and therefore money/income through using virtual assistants to help you run your business. Taking some of the workload out of your hands means you are free to do other things. This could be more meaningful work such as for charity, just having fun and enjoying your life, or even moving into other business ventures. Through leveraging comes choice. The right virtual assistant is worth his or her weight in gold and can seriously help your business. If managed the right way, your stress is reduced, you have less menial jobs to do and you can focus on the important aspects of running your business.

Dont Forget You Are Here Forever

Don't Forget You're Here Forever

This week I am doing a temp job, and on the desk I am working from, is a shabby little laminated sign “Don’t Forget You’re Here Forever”. That just about sums up everything I don’t want in a job. It is also the completed opposite of how I view life. We are here on earth for a miniscule amount of time. To feel trapped in any part of your life, well it just bites.

It is incredibly easy to feel like you are being ruled by your job or business, in fact it is pretty normal. If you read my last post Are You Having a Breakdown or Breakthrough, you will know that even for us, it took a significant event to force a change. Sometimes change is just what you need. It could be anything from revamping your business and giving it an overhaul, to changing careers, to doing some study. Do whatever you can to bring back the excitement into life.

So what part of your life do you need to change or breathe some excitement into? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

In the meantime I am loving every minute of this temp job that finishes on Friday. I have no idea what I will be doing on Monday yet, but at least I am moving closer to my ideal lifestyle.

p.s. Temp work kind of suits me being that I am a Gemini – boredom is the opposite of happiness!

The Reason

Sometimes life throws you a curve ball. A challenge. As they say, life wasn’t meant to be easy. This week, I have had a big challenge thrown my way and it has got me thinking about a lot of things. One of those things I am thinking about is my reason for starting my business. See, my hubby had a little surfing accident…dropping down the face of a 9 foot wave landing awkwardly on his board and damaging his left leg pretty badly. That changes our income temporarily for fulfilling dreamlines and also puts a stop to many of his own dreamlines until we know the long term effects of his injury.

Which brings me to something I read and wrote down not so long ago. It goes a little something like this…

You must always have a:

  • Short term source of income to pay the bills
  • Two medium term projects that supplement that income
  • One long term project that is years away from fruition.

Cash Flowing into Pot of Gold

So what does all this have to do with dreamlining?

Income that’s what. Dreamlines are funded by cash flow and most of us have limited varieties of cash flowing into our lives. That is why I am starting my business whilst still working a regular job. An extra source of income would make a situation like this a little less of a worry financially.

The question you need to ask yourself is “Do I have a strong enough cash flow plan that allows me to fulfil my dreamlines now and in the future?” (or are you putting all your eggs in one basket?) My answer to that is…not quite. It is a good reminder to solidify our finances and it is THE reason I am building my side business.

Just quickly, if you haven’t read the posts on Dreamline Planning and Dreamline Planning Details, have a peek at these. My next couple of posts will go into the details of how to set up a conscious spending plan to fulfil your dreamlines.

Progressing Towards my Dreams

Today has been a day of experiments, discoveries and some forward progress, along with some backwards progress. I have the fortunate pleasure of being in the position to have time to follow my dreams. My Dear Hubby is very understanding and flexible enough to provide me with this opportunity.

For about five years now I have wanted to build my scrapbooking website, but working long days in front a computer meant that I had little left to give at the end of a ten hour day. The past few months were to be my chance to start sinking my teeth into it, but there have been a lot of frustrations along the way. My employer had been continually increasing my hours from the originally agreed two days per week, up to five days per week over the course of the past six months. It has meant little time to work on my projects. In early January, I put my foot down and said no more – back to two days. And nothing happened until this week. Finally a week free to work on my dreams. It is such a relief to feel like I am actually making progress again.

For me, my business will be the basis of my location freedom. I am not afraid of hard work, I would just like to be doing some travel and exploring in between bouts of designing beautiful kits and papers. I am so pleased with the progress I have made so far on putting together the structure of my business. It has all the key elements in assisting me to realise my dreamlines.

  • The scrapbooking business is purely an online entity
  • I can design from my computer anywhere
  • Finished product can be uploaded to the site anywhere I have access to the internet
  • Batching of product creation is possible, such as spending a solid two week block creating product and blog posts, then slowly releasing that product to market over the weeks that follow whilst fulfilling Dreamlines
  • There is no physical product to ship

I love where I live, but I love exploring other countries. Considering most of my remaining Bucket List entries are DO based rather than HAVE based, then freedom to explore is a key component of the lifestyle design I am working on. I don’t expect everyone to be the same, that is why Dreamlining is such an enlightening experience.
